Zot Chanuka

Image
Zot Chanuka is the last day of Chaunuka. Why is it named Zot? (This)  This is because it was the last day of the miracle of the oil.  The one flask of oil that was found by with the stamp of the High Priest was only enough to burn for one day.  It kept burning and burning, and burning!  The news of this miracle of oil that didn't go out must have spread like wildfire, even in those days with out any form of modern communication! But as you know, you don't just let a miracle happen, you also do what you can! So the oil factory that was under the supervision of the Temple must have been working around the clock to produce olive oil.  This eighth day must have seemed like a real miracle for the oil to keep burning. The miracle was really apparent on this last day,  that is why this last day of Chanuka is "Zot Chanuka" This is Chanuka, for it was the last time that Hashem in those day revealed himself. May Hashem continue the daily miracles that we s...

Chanuka is coming!

Image
The stores are already stocking Jelly Donuts!  See here, don't they look Yummy?  Bring a few home every day and enjoy the Holiday. The reason that we eat donuts is because we want to remember the miracle of the oil.  What does this mean? After the war between the Jews and the Syrian Greeks, the Cohanim entered the Temple, and while they were cleaning up they found only one flask of Olive Oil with the stamp of the  High Priest, that was certified to be pure olive oil, the only kind that was permitted to be used in the 7 branched Menora that had to be kept burning 24 hours a day.  Usually one flask would be for one day.  So, they lit the Menora with the one flask of oil, because they wanted to observe the mitzvah for one day at least.  They sent out for more oil, but it would take 8 days to pick the olives, and process them for use in the Menora.  It had to be of a special type of oil, so that is why it took so long to make. Hashem, in order...

Well, it sure has come up in the world since then.  This is a picture of the interior of the Jerusalem YMCA, I turned around and said "Wow!" Snapped this picture for all to see. It looks most impressive in the evening as the sun is setting, so the window is lit. Sunset is a lovely time

Image
Sunset is a lovely time.  During Elul, we use all our efforts to become better people, by looking back upon our deeds and do better next time,  Just as sunset is the end of the day, and we reflect upon what we have done this day, so Elul is the same for the whole year.  May everyone in Am Yisrael use this time to reflect and correct all the character flaws that we have and do better next Year! It is the happiest season of the Jewish Year!  Let's take a tour of Jerusalem as she gets ready for Sukkot!  Here are some enterprising young men selling the 4 species, on Givat Shaul Street.  Yoel, in front has sets of the Lulav, Etrog, Haddasim at a good price!  These are Hadassim, and Etrogim.  The two etrogim here have Pitom, that is they are extra special!  Every building has multiple Sukkas!  More Sukkot!   Here is a baby Etrog tree, about 6 Sumonths old.  It will be many years until we can pick its fruit!  Happy Sukkot!   Rachael Alice www.travelinghairsalon.weebly.com 058-750-0608

New Moon sets in the West

Image
This Motzi Shabbat was the Third of Tammuz I caught the moon just as it was going down in the west. There is a Jewish prayer that we say on the New Moon, and it is said only for the first seven days!  Bircat Ha Levana!  Bircat because that is the word for blessing, and Levana for the moon. For more information about the New Moon and the history of this short prayer service go here: http://www.oztorah.com/2010/11/blessing-the-new-moon-ask-the-rabbi/ Chodesh Tov, Rachael Orbach http://jerusalemscenes.blogspot.co.il/
