Zot Chanuka

Zot Chanuka is the last day of Chaunuka.

Why is it named Zot? (This)  This is because it was the last day of the miracle of the oil.  The one flask of oil that was found by with the stamp of the High Priest was only enough to burn for one day.  It kept burning and burning, and burning!  The news of this miracle of oil that didn't go out must have spread like wildfire, even in those days with out any form of modern communication!

But as you know, you don't just let a miracle happen, you also do what you can! So the oil factory that was under the supervision of the Temple must have been working around the clock to produce olive oil.  This eighth day must have seemed like a real miracle for the oil to keep burning.

The miracle was really apparent on this last day,  that is why this last day of Chanuka is "Zot Chanuka" This is Chanuka, for it was the last time that Hashem in those day revealed himself.

May Hashem continue the daily miracles that we see around us, and help us to appreciate the small miracles that occur in our daily lives.

Chanuka is coming!

The stores are already stocking Jelly Donuts!  See here, don't they look Yummy?  Bring a few home every day and enjoy the Holiday.

The reason that we eat donuts is because we want to remember the miracle of the oil.  What does this mean?
After the war between the Jews and the Syrian Greeks, the Cohanim entered the Temple, and while they were cleaning up they found only one flask of Olive Oil with the stamp of the  High Priest, that was certified to be pure olive oil, the only kind that was permitted to be used in the 7 branched Menora that had to be kept burning 24 hours a day.  Usually one flask would be for one day.  So, they lit the Menora with the one flask of oil, because they wanted to observe the mitzvah for one day at least.  They sent out for more oil, but it would take 8 days to pick the olives, and process them for use in the Menora.  It had to be of a special type of oil, so that is why it took so long to make.

Hashem, in order that the lights of the Menora would shine and give hope to the Jewish people did the miracle and the oil in the Menora lasted the whole eight day period that it took to make new olive oil.

This is why we have an eight day holiday of Chanuka.  The word חנוכה  means rededication, the Temple was rededicated, during this time, and we also should use this time of year to rededicate ourselves to learn more Torah, do more Mitzvot, and bring Am Yisrael to the perfection that we all strive for.  Erase war, and heartache, and bring perfect health and happiness during this Festival of Lights.

The YMCA of Jerusalem

Do you remember the dingy, dirty, overcrowded YMCA's of America?

Well, it sure has come up in the world since then.  This is a picture of the interior of the Jerusalem YMCA, I turned around and said "Wow!" Snapped this picture for all to see.
It looks most impressive in the evening as the sun is setting, so the window is lit.

There are lots of events at the YMCA, I mostly hear about classical concerts, it is a perfect venue for Mozart and Hayden, don't you think?

Y M C A I'll meet you at the Y M C A!

Sunset is a lovely time

Sunset is a lovely time.  During Elul, we use all our efforts to become better people, by looking back upon our deeds and do better next time,  Just as sunset is the end of the day, and we reflect upon what we have done this day, so Elul is the same for the whole year.  May everyone in Am Yisrael use this time to reflect and correct all the character flaws that we have and do better next Year!

Summer Sunset in Jerusalem

This is a summer sunset that I caught as I was walking home last night. Just think, the sun is 93 million miles away, or 3 * 10 to the 10th kilometers, but Hashem has made our world so beautiful.  This is a fitting end to a hot day.

The Rothschild Hospital

This is the site of the first hospital in Jerusalem. It was established by Rothschild, in 1888, and in 1939 Hadassah took it over.  The building is still standing and is in use as a medical training center.  I was passing by on HaNeviim Street,  and I couldn't resist to take in this bit of Jerusalem history.

See you on the street!

New Moon sets in the West

This Motzi Shabbat was the Third of Tammuz I caught the moon just as it was going down in the west.

There is a Jewish prayer that we say on the New Moon, and it is said only for the first seven days!  Bircat Ha Levana!  Bircat because that is the word for blessing, and Levana for the moon.

For more information about the New Moon and the history of this short prayer service go here:

Small groups, the bony trees poke into the sky.

Later the sun will come, along with hope.
